Speed plus sharp curves often equal car accidents

Most motorists in Hawaii and throughout the nation understand that navigating sharp curves requires skill and caution behind the wheel. Those who speed often cause car accidents when their vehicles cross over the center lines of traffic while rounding bends. This appears to have been the case in a tragedy that occurred on a recent Friday evening in the South Kona region.

There were two vehicles involved in the fatal collision. A 34-year-old woman was driving one of the cars, which was not carrying any passengers at the time. In the other, were a 63-year-old woman and 66-year-old man. Authorities believe excessive speed was a causal factor in the crash.

There was a head-on collision between the two vehicles. The man and woman traveling together were both injured and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Sadly, the woman in the other car did not survive her injuries. She was pinned inside her vehicle and rescue workers say she was already deceased when they arrived.

The road was shut down for more than four hours following the tragic accident. There are no alternate routes in the area between mile markers 96 and 97 on Highway 11. No information regarding the makes or models of the vehicles was provided as the cars were not able to be identified due to substantial damage.

After fault has been established and if negligence is proved, either the injured victims or the family of the deceased victim may seek compensation by filing claims in an Hawaii civil court. Those injured in car accidents where the party deemed responsible has died can file against the decedent's estate.
