PROTECTING THE LEGAL INTERESTS OF INJURED HAWAII RESIDENTS AND VISITORS SINCE 1973

Motorists: beware of reckless drivers

Vast numbers of visitors travel throughout Hawaii on a daily basis. Many others live on the beautiful islands, full time. As in all other states, certain situations may place both visitors and residents at risk for injuries. One of the most common types of dangerous situations involves reckless drivers.

Just recently, there was a terrible accident that affected four separate vehicles. Maui police say the tragic crash appears to have been caused by a motorist who failed to stop at a red light. The car reportedly ran the light and crashed into a truck that was turning left at the time. Police suspect that speed may also be to blame, and they have not ruled out alcohol and drugs.

The impact of the initial collision sent the truck veering across the center line of traffic. This set off a chain reaction of several more collisions when the truck hit a car stopped in traffic that then collided with the car that was behind it. The accident was so severe that the engine of one of the vehicles was found lying in the road. Sadly, two occupants in the truck were killed in the tragic crash.

Reckless drivers are often criminally charged when their actions cause serious injuries or death to others. In Hawaii and all other states, injured victims or immediate family members of fatal victims are also able to file personal claims in civil court to seek compensation for damages. For many, the monetary awards issued in successfully litigated cases may be the only means of offsetting exorbitant costs that are often associated with such incidents.
