All motorists are obligated to adhere to traffic regulations and conduct themselves with caution while driving. Reckless drivers in Hawaii and elsewhere continue to plague roadways, placing all who travel at risk. Often, careless behavior behind the wheel of a motor vehicle results in an accident that causes injury to one or more innocent victims.

Just after 1 a.m. on a recent Sunday, a tragedy occurred that involved a pedestrian. The unidentified person was apparently walking along the shoulder of a road in an eastbound direction. Suddenly, a pickup truck traveling west apparently veered across the highway and ran him over.

The pedestrian reportedly suffered critical injuries from the impact of the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency care. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries about five hours later. Law enforcement agents who responded to the scene of the accident have stated that excessive speed and alcohol are suspected as two main factors in the cause of the tragedy.

A 27-year-old man who was allegedly driving the pickup at the time was arrested under suspicion of driving while intoxicated and negligent homicide. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing and the man has been released from jail pending results. An autopsy was ordered to help identify the victim and determine the exact cause of death.

Reckless drivers are menaces to Hawaii roadways and others throughout the nation. Their negligent actions often result in tragedy and devastation for others when fatalities occur in accidents that most likely could have been prevented. Suffering the untimely death of a loved one under such circumstances is often traumatic. However, immediate family members may take comfort in knowing that they can seek justice on behalf of their deceased loved one by filing a wrongful death claim in a civil court.
