Common Injuries Caused by Heavy Equipment on Construction Sites

Home > Common Injuries Caused by Heavy Equipment on Construction Sites

Construction sites are busy areas where heavy equipment is used regularly. However, alongside the benefits of these machines come significant risks.

Even when you are exercising perfect safety measures, someone else’s negligence can cause devastating harm to you. Understanding the risks of being around heavy equipment can protect you from accidents and help you determine the best course of action if you do sustain a serious injury.

Crush injuries

One of the most severe types of injuries on construction sites involves crushing damage from heavy equipment. This can occur if you become caught between moving parts of machinery or pinned against fixed objects. The sheer weight and force of the equipment can lead to catastrophic injuries, including fractures or internal organ damage.

Falls

Falls from heavy equipment are another prevalent source of injuries. Slipping from a ladder or falling from an elevated platform are common machinery-related incidents. These types of accidents can result in broken bones, head injuries and spinal cord damage.

Struck-by accidents

There is always a very real possibility of heavy equipment striking nearby workers. This can happen due to malfunctioning equipment or operator error. As an example, objects swinging or falling from a crane might cause serious head injuries and lacerations.

Electrocution

Construction sites often contain a complex network of electrical wires and equipment. Heavy machinery operators may inadvertently come into contact with live wires, leading to electrocution. Even non-operators working nearby can be at risk if proper precautions, such as insulation and grounding, are not followed.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the construction industry accounts for 16% of fatal work injuries in Hawaii. In an environment where dangerous equipment is always present, it is important to know your rights when that equipment causes a catastrophic injury.
