We are proud to announce that Amaechi Ijoma, a student at the University of Pittsburgh, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Cronin, Fried, Sekiya, Kekina & Fairbanks Undergraduate Scholarship!

About the Winner

Amaechi is majoring in Chemical Engineering and pursuing minors in both Bioengineering and Chemistry. She plans to attend medical school after graduation and build a career in medicine that is dedicated to improving healthcare access for underserved communities. For Amaechi, medicine is not simply a profession, but a calling that reflects both her personal experiences and her deep commitment to service.

Growing up in an immigrant household with a mother from Uganda and a father from Nigeria, Amaechi gained a perspective on life that bridges cultures and communities. In her essay, Amaechi reflected on a quote that has guided her since childhood:

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

That principle has shaped her life both in and out of the classroom. From volunteering with after-school programs to mentoring peers through the National Society of Black Engineers, Amaechi has consistently invested her time and energy into building supportive communities. She has also volunteered at local hospitals, where she has seen firsthand how small acts of compassion can bring comfort to patients and their families.

Looking to the future, Amaechi envisions returning to Uganda and Nigeria to establish community clinics and expand access to healthcare. She also hopes to implement health education programs and advocate for policy reforms that address racial and economic disparities in healthcare. Her vision for the future reflects the spirit of this scholarship.

We congratulate Amaechi on this achievement and are honored to support her as she continues her education!
