Advice for preventing medical malpractice

When you go to your doctor for treatment regarding a medical condition, the last thing you want is to become the victim of medical malpractice. Unfortunately, though, numerous Americans go home from their doctors far worse off than they were to begin with.

Patients, however, can take some practical steps to avoid medical malpractice.

Follow these tips to avoid medical malpractice

The most important way to prevent medical malpractice is to use your common sense. In addition, here are a few things you can do to decrease your chances of becoming a victim:

  • Communicate with your doctors: Your doctors might not think to ask you all the questions they need to ask. By telling your doctor about all of your symptoms, you will help him or her give you a better diagnosis and treatment. Also, tell your doctor about any allergies or existing conditions from which you’re suffering.
  • Save all of your receipts and doctors’ notes: The more you have in writing, the better able you’ll be to follow your doctor’s instructions to the letter. In addition, you’ll also have a record of mistakes and errors your doctor made in your treatment protocol.
  • Follow up with your doctor: If you go home and your doctor’s treatments aren’t working, or if you feel worse because of them, contact your doctor immediately. Never feel shy that you’re bothering your doctor. It’s his or her job to make sure that the treatment is working — or at the very least, that the treatment is not making you worse. If your doctor tries to brush off a serious problem as nothing, be consistent, and go to another doctor for a second opinion.
  • Don’t be afraid of uncomfortable conversations: When it comes to doctors, you need to stand up for your health sometimes. If you feel you know what’s best for yourself, you might have deeper insight into your situation than your doctor. Always get a second opinion if you and your doctor don’t agree on your treatment plan.

Fight back if you were hurt by medical malpractice

If you were hurt by medical malpractice the first thing you need to focus on is getting better. However, the costs associated with your medical care and treatment could be extremely high. This is where an in-depth understanding of medical malpractice law can help. The more injured patients know about their legal rights and options, the better chances they’ll have of being able to pay for the medical care they need.
