After a racing car plowed into her, a world-class athlete faces a long road to recovery

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The attorney for a bicyclist critically injured in a Tantalus crash is asking for the public's help in tracking down two other cars that were involved.

The crash left the 33-year-old bicyclist, Lectie Altman, with extensive injuries.

And her attorney, Rick Fried, said the driver who hit her was racing two other vehicles.

He's asked for the public's help in tracking them down and calling police. (Reach the HPD traffic investigation section at 723-3413.)

After the crash, officers arrested 20-year-old Taylor Liang for first-degree negligent injury. He's been released while police investigate.

"As far as we can tell Taylor Liang has not given them that information (on the other drivers), which to me is quite surprising to put it mildly," said Fried.

Meanwhile, Fried said Altman is in good spirits, despite the long road to recovery she's got ahead of her.

"When I saw her today her attitude was just unbelievable considering what she's going through," said Fried.

Altman is a world-class athlete. In 2016, she was the Hawaii 70.3 Ironman Amateur champion and came in first overall in the swimming portion of the race.

Fried said at this point her athletic future is uncertain.

"This girl is obviously very bright, very disciplined but it's a long way for her even being able to walk properly," said Fried.

"She went to Queen's and has had four major surgeries. Hand surgery, arm surgery, hip surgery, knee surgery with allografts. In other words skin grafts. She's had external fixators for the knee and will be at Queen's for a long time. There will be more surgeries to come."

In the meantime, Fried is calling on the city to install speed control devices on Tantalus to prevent people from racing and drifting.

He suggested rumble strips or speed bumps.
