Mililani man awarded $5.6 million after cancer misdiagnosis

A Mililani man has been awarded $5.6 million in a lawsuit against Straub Clinic  & Hospital over a misdiagnosis.

Jeff Kim says when he went to the hospital in 2008, doctors told him he did not have cancer.

Three years later, Kim says the tumor in his mouth grew from the size of a lima bean to the size of a fist. He underwent several surgeries in Hawaii and Seattle to get the cancer out.

Kim says he now has no feeling on the left side of his mouth.

“So basically when I eat, the saliva comes out of my face because the gland’s not working, so your body will get rid of whatever food it needs to, so it’s going to find a way so it’ll actually come out of the side of my face like sweat,” he said.

A spokeswoman from Straub says the hospital disagrees with the verdict and is exploring options with its legal counsel.
