Some Hawaii car accidents involve children of minor ages

An incident occurred in the parking lot of a veterans’ memorial center on a recent Saturday in Hawaii. A car accident involving a pedestrian and two vehicles left one person severely injured. Car accidents such as this one sometimes involve children of minor ages.

An 87-year-old woman was reportedly standing near a vehicle that was in a designated parking spot in the lot. An 11-year-old boy is said to have begun backing the vehicle out of the parking stall when it allegedly struck the woman and knocked her to the ground. Police say that after hitting the woman, the vehicle continued to move until it crashed into a second vehicle that was stopped behind it in the parking lot.

Both vehicles were listed as having sustained minor damages in the incident. The elderly woman was taken to a Maui emergency room with critical injuries. No update has been provided regarding her current condition.

When car accidents in Hawaii are caused by children of minor ages who are not legally old enough to operate motor vehicles, the parents or legal guardian could potentially be held liable for the tortious actions of their children. Of course, circumstances of an individual case and events leading up to an accident would be significant, such as whether keys were left in the ignition of the vehicle and/or who owned the vehicle. An injured victim has the right to file a claim in a civil court, seeking compensation for damages he or she has sustained as a result of a car accident caused by another person. Damages claimed might include pain and suffering, medical bills or costs incurred as a result of physical therapy or other ongoing care in recovery.
