PROTECTING THE LEGAL INTERESTS OF INJURED HAWAII RESIDENTS AND VISITORS SINCE 1973

Speed a factor in some Hawaii car accidents

In a certain location in Hawaii, there is a curve in the road known to some as “dead man’s bend.” Many who have grown up in the area claim that this portion of the road is notorious for being the scene of many car accidents. Speed limits are posted at 25 mph, but nearby residents say it is not uncommon for drivers to speed through the curve, often resulting in collisions.

A serious crash occurred on the Waianae bend on a recent Sunday afternoon. Police say that two vehicles were involved in the collision and eight people, including a 2-year-old infant, suffered injuries. Apparently, a pickup truck failed to negotiate the bend, crossed the center line of traffic and struck an oncoming vehicle, head-on. The eight victims were immediately transported to area hospitals for emergency treatment.

Honolulu police who responded to the scene say that an investigation of the crash is ongoing, and they suspect excessive speed was a factor. A lieutenant said that it appears that the driver of the pickup was distracted in some way as he attempted to navigate the curve in the road. One man who lives near the bend told reporters that his father taught him from a young age of the dangers associated with the curve.

Car accidents in Hawaii that are found to have been caused by the negligent or reckless actions of another driver sometimes result in personal injury claims being filed in civil court by those who suffered injuries. Many injuries result in the need for ongoing medical care, physical therapy or other situations that bring undue financial stress to recovering victims. In a successfully litigated claim, the court can award compensation for damages that can be used to offset some of those costs.
