PROTECTING THE LEGAL INTERESTS OF INJURED HAWAII RESIDENTS AND VISITORS SINCE 1973

Car accidents sometimes bring devastation to families in Hawaii

Family members of a victim from a recent fatal accident in Hawaii recently lamented the unexpected loss of their loved one. The stepfather of the victim said that he is saddened by car accidents that involve alcohol and driving at excessive speeds and suspects that the recent tragedy might have involved both. Another vehicle occupant survived the accident but suffered serious injuries.

The early morning crash on March 18 occurred on Kamehameha Highway. The vehicle involved is said to have careened off the road, plowing through a nearby fence. A responding police officer stated that both vehicle occupants were ejected from the car during the crash. He also reported that speeding and alcohol are considered as factors in the tragedy.

A 27-year-old woman did not survive the crash. A second occupant from the car survived but suffered serious injuries. Sadly, the deceased leaves behind a 6-year-old child, and her extended family members have expressed their devastation in the loss of the boy’s mother.

It has not yet been officially clarified who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash; however, in car accidents where a person suffers injury or is killed due to the negligence of another, it is appropriate to pursue legal action against the person or persons deemed at fault. Negligent or reckless drivers may be held liable for the financial damages sustained through injury suffered by an accident survivor or by the untimely death of a loved one for immediate family members of the deceased. In similar cases that were successfully litigated in Hawaii, a civil court has been known to award monetary compensation designed to help alleviate the financial burdens incurred through medical care, funeral expenses or other documented losses sustained in the aftermath of an accident.
