Hawaiian kids on bikes at risk in car accidents

Riding a bicycle is a common pastime enjoyed by children in Hawaii and throughout the country. While bicycling contains a certain amount of inherent risk, potential car accidents are a concern when riders are navigating paths near traffic. Injuries suffered when a vehicle hits a bicyclist often prove fatal; those who do survive may be left with permanently disabling conditions.

A recent incident resulted in the hospitalization of an 11-year-old boy. His condition has been listed as extremely critical. Police say the child was riding his bicycle on a recent Wednesday, around 1:30 p.m., when a truck driver making a right-hand turn ran right over him. At the time, the boy was in a crosswalk, and three of his friends, who were on foot, were accompanying him.

A witness said the driver was not initially aware of what he had done and only stopped after others notified him of what had just occurred. Authorities say a negligent injury investigation has been opened in the aftermath of this tragedy. A man who was working nearby when the accident happened said he has seen many similar near misses in the same intersection because drivers often look away while making their turns.

Car accidents often lead to severe injuries and, in worst cases, even death to many victims in Hawaii each year. Those left behind after such accidents may feel unsure about where to turn for help. Personal injury attorneys are able to guide families through the process of pursuing liability claims against any party deemed responsible for an injury or death.
