PROTECTING THE LEGAL INTERESTS OF INJURED HAWAII RESIDENTS AND VISITORS SINCE 1973

Car accidents in Hawaii often leave families devastated

The mention of Hawaii typically conjures up images of beauty, tropical wonder and vacations. All of these things and more are enjoyed by millions of residents and tourists on the islands every day. However, as is true in all other states, car accidents and other incidents often occur that put an immediate damper on travel adventures or residential daily life.

One family suffered the sudden loss of their loved one in a pedestrian accident on a recent Sunday evening. The 19-year-old was apparently walking across the street near an intersection when a vehicle, allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed, struck him. Sadly, the young man’s injuries were so severe he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following preliminary investigations into the tragic accident, authorities issued a statement saying that they believe both speed and alcohol were leading causal factors in the incident. The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle was reportedly arrested for driving under the influence and causing an accidental death. This tragedy was listed at the 14th fatal car accident on the island in 2016.

Car accidents that result in fatalities can leave Hawaiian families facing tremendous financial strain in addition to the emotional trauma normally associated with such situations. Many have filed wrongful death claims in civil court that have led to monetary judgments, providing restitution to immediate family members. Such compensation can be used to help pay funeral expenses, medical bills from any care rendered before a victim’s death, and other losses related to a fatal accident.
