Protecting The Legal Interests Of Injured Hawaii Residents And Visitors Since 1973

Reckless drivers pose risks to Hawaii pedestrians

In multiple unrelated accidents, pedestrians in Hawaii have been harmed by motorists. Reckless drivers place themselves and all others at risk, whether those others are also operating motor vehicles or merely standing on a sidewalk. Tragically, more than one of the recent incidents resulted in fatalities.

On a recent Thursday morning, an 86-year-old woman was walking on a King Street sidewalk in Honolulu. A man thought to be in his 70s was reportedly driving a sedan in the area. According to reports, his vehicle struck the back end of a truck. Immediately after the first collision, the man is said to have driven past the truck and crashed into several parked vehicles and the pedestrian.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment of critical injuries. Sadly, she was later pronounced dead. Police stated that the man was not the owner of the vehicle he was driving. He also did not appear to have suffered any medical episode in the moments just prior to the accidents; however, police reported that they intend to review a video from a nearby business that captured the incident on film to see if excessive speed was a factor.

Data provided lists seven pedestrian fatalities on the Hawaiian island of Oahu in 2015. Those injured by negligent or reckless drivers have the legal right to pursue litigation in a civil court in order to seek compensation for damages. When an accident results in the death of a victim, his or her immediate family members may file a claim on behalf of their deceased loved one. It is not uncommon for claimants to seek compensation as recompense for emotional pain and suffering, loss of wages and medical bills for care administered to a victim preceding his or her death, as well as funeral expenses and other financial losses associated with an accident.
