Lack of patience on Hawaii’s roads can create reckless drivers

It might be difficult to find a driver in Hawaii who has not lost his or her patience with traffic on occasion. Most drivers deal with their frustration while continuing to observe the rules of the road. Regrettably, however, some drivers give in to their lack of patience and become reckless drivers.

Being impatient may be what caused the driver of a pickup truck to attempt to pass another vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway. It was around 10 a.m. when the two vehicles were traveling east on Kaumualii Highway on Kauai. When the pickup truck attempted to re-enter the eastbound lane, it clipped the front of the car.

The pickup truck’s driver lost control at that point and slid into the oncoming lane of traffic, where it slammed into another vehicle. The driver of the westbound vehicle suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died. The driver of the pickup suffered unknown injuries for which he was taken to a hospital in the area. Reports indicate he was released the same day after being treated. The driver of the eastbound car was fortunate enough not to suffer any injuries.

Hawaiian authorities have not yet indicated what charges, if any, will be filed against the driver believed responsible for the crash. As is the case with other reckless drivers, the family of the deceased victim may file a wrongful death claim against him. Damages may be awarded if the available evidence establishes the driver’s negligence to the court’s satisfaction. Any monetary restitution received could alleviate the financial burdens that often accompany a sudden, unexpected death.
