Head-on collisions are some of the most violent on the road. To avoid such crashes in Hawaii, where the roads can be very curvy, drivers have to remain constantly alert.
A tragic head-on accident in Pepe’ekeo has taken a driver’s life. According to initial reports, the driver of a car crossed the center line of traffic on Highway 19. The vehicle was reportedly northbound from Hilo when it collided with a flatbed truck in the southbound lane.
The driver of the truck reportedly did not suffer serious injuries, but the car driver, a 54-year-old man, was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center. An 82-year-old woman was also in the car, and she was taken to the hospital, as well, though her injuries did not appear to be serious.
As is common after fatal auto accidents, the driver of the truck was administered a blood test. However, police do not believe that drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
